Sharing Our Employee’s Journey

We wanted to tell you a little more about our new employees, who successfully completed our Samsung Training Academy and their backgrounds and what attracted them to work for TMT First.

We selected 5 of our newly qualified Mobile Phone Repair Technicians and interviewed each in turn.  Here’s what they had to say:

Using my initiative

“Hi, my name is Abbie and I am a mum to 3 boys. I hold two NVQs, one in Customer Services and the other in Housing Management.  Before that I completed my general education with 11 GCSE.    I have always worked in customer services.  In the past I worked for Aspire Housing and also at the Keele Service forecourts, so I have always interacted with people.   My new employment is very different.

As a hobby I have always repaired consoles and phones, but never got my foot in the door to do this professionally. Some fifteen years ago my dad, who was self-employed broke his phone.   He desperately needed it for work purposes so I asked myself ‘How can I help him?’  Out of 3 disused and broken phones, I managed to repair his phone.  It worked fine.  As a matter of fact, he still has it in his drawer now.

TMT First’s Samsung Training Academy was my way into a job I now love. As to the actual training, I felt more comfortable learning the ropes first and then growing alongside company’s expectations.  I was one of the only women in my training group, but everybody was very supportive.  I am really pleased I am now a full-time employee of TMT First and to be part of the team. I would like to play my part in helping both myself, and the company grow.”

From Tanks to Mobiles

“Hi, I’m Kaine and I live locally. My background is ex-military and I had been in the army for 6 years.  I have an NVQ in Mechanical Engineering working on tanks, which I gained whilst there.Since being a civilian again, I have had quite a few jobs, but I was looking for something different to do.  I knew I liked technology. Whilst working as a window-cleaner, I saw the job advertisement for a Trainee Repair Technician at TMT First via Indeed.  I was looking for something in Electronics, but I had no previous experience in this field.

The vacancy appealed to me, as training was being offered. The industry is hard to get into, if you don’t have further education or experience. The Samsung Training Academy was an attractive offer and a great way into a techy role.Fixing computers at home has always been a hobby of mine.  The training was very good and I learned countless skills I certainly gained a lot of repair knowledge.  I know a motherboard is a motherboard, but I was amazed to be working at such a small scale as you do when working with mobile phones.

I enjoy my new job.  I like learning new skills.  It is my reason for getting out of bed in the morning.  Working for TMT First feels like working for one big family, it feels like belonging somewhere and my family have also noticed how much happier I am”.

Enjoying England

“Hello, my name is Daliana and I am from Romania. I have lived in the UK for 3 years now.  I like England and have many friends here.   I studied  Mechanical Engineering at the University of Arad in Romania, where I graduated. After that I worked with electrical components in the car industry. Since coming to the UK, I have worked in various jobs in warehouses, picking and packing.

I was looking for a job on Indeed and applied for vacancy with TMT First for a QC role.  Then the pandemic struck and the job opening was subsequently cancelled.  After a few months I applied again. This time for the job of a Samsung Repair Technician.  I applied for the job first , not realising that they had a Samsung Training Acadamy.   I was lucky to be involved in the very first training round, which started on 5th January this year. I thought it felt a little like being in high school. It was intense but a great experience. I liked the group environment, although I was the only woman among 4 men.  If you start by going into the repair centre first it would take you longer to learn everything, as everyone is really busy.  The training also gives you the opportunity to ask questions as the trainers are available all the time.

Since being employed by TMT First full-time I am much more contented.  There are targets set for you to work towards, but they are nothing to be scared about, as they are achievable. I am confident that I am able to do the job well and am enjoying working for TMT First”.

Precision Working

“Hi, I’m Connor. When I left high-schooI, I worked in the family business doing Ground Work. After that, I started my own landscaping company, which I did for 2 years.

I have always been passionate about technology and Computers.  It has always been a hobby of mine.  When I was looking for specific jobs, I came across TMT who offered training.  This was my opportunity to start-out again.  I though this is the best way to start and build my knowledge in that area.

I am used to precision work.  Whilst doing ground working, I worked a lot on school playgrounds and measurements had to be precise to avoid potential accidents occurring, whilst children are playing. I had a decent understanding of electronic devices, which I picked up during tinkering with different devices, such as games consoles, laptops, computers and mobiles. It was a hobby of mine. The training was quite fun and it didn’t feel like going back to school.  I was dreading it at first, to be honest.  The senior technician made it fun and no question was too much to ask.  It was interesting to find out about the software specific to the different phones. I also made friends with everyone in the group.

It feels good to be a full-time member of staff with TMT First. Now I’m finally here, I’m really enjoying it.  I’ve come a long way.  Who would have predicted this 6 months ago? I am so glad I pushed myself”.

All Around The World To Find My Vocation

“Hello, my name is James. I am local to the area.  My background has been mainly in Sales.  I did live in Australia for 3 years, where I sold mobile phones, but also got involved in the repair, mainly of Apple phones.  I am self-taught on the repair side. I went to Australia  mainly to travel and see that part of the world. Before that I  studied Law at University and have a degree. When I came back to the UK I worked in a call-centre, but did not enjoy it.  I remember an old friend who worked at TMT First so I did some research on TMT First.  Via  their website I found out that there were career opportunities.

I saw the Training opportunity advertised on the careers section and decided to apply.  I have always had an interest in electronics and some knowledge, but this needed updating and I was after being taught properly, instead of relying on my limited self-taught knowledge. During my training I was introduced to the Samsung systems and I learned a lot of tips and tricks. In the training environment we were all together in a group setting.  We were allowed time for bouncing of each other and helping each other.  The support by the trainers was great.

Now I am employed by TMT First I couldn’t be happier.  I am a lot more confident and enjoy what I do.  It is engaging work and I enjoy it”.
